Pressure Decorating System

Pressure Decorating System

The cute animals or dolls that decorate many children’s cakes are performed with this technique, which isn’t very complicated but must be practiced. The good thing is that we can make the figures on top of acetate and later store, or place directly on the cake.

Technique of the Pressure System
To apply this technique you must use unadorned filter tips in medium and big sizes. As always we will begin practicing on an acetate lamina.  The figures that come out well can be dried on the lamina and removed without any risks. They can be stored in boxes or plastic containers and be used when necessary, stick them with glaze to the cake. Once you have progressed with this practice you can make them directly on the cake. Here are some techniques which can be used for making these figures; later on you’ll be able to make your own designs.

How to prepare the blended glaze
Prepare the glaze with the same ingredients as the royal glaze, but with a dab of tartar cream or baking powder sifted with powdered sugar. Instead of beating it manually, you can use a blender. The tartar cream makes the glaze dry faster which is very important in making these designs. The glaze must be fluffy, of a medium consistency, similar to meringue. Give it the coloring in the same way as for the royal glaze.

Musical note
Using a filter tip #70 put pressure enough and for a fat horizontal drop, add a vertical strip that connects with the tip of the drop and, in the other border make one or two drops  in an outward direction putting very little pressure.

Friendly ghost
With white glaze and a filter tip #90 make a ball for the head; stretch the circle putting less pressure until you cut it. Place the tip on the body again and make an outward streak to make the arm.

Make the other arm on the other side of the body. With black glaze and a very thin tip make the eyes and mouth by making circles.

Climbing doll
This type of doll is used as a base for any other dolls you wish to make and looks very attractive when hanging on a lateral side of the cake, showing up at the top. To make it start by making a color glazed line for the body and a glazed skin color ball for the head using filter tip #21E. with filter tip #90 make the legs and arms with a line (to make the legs start by putting a lot of pressure and later loosen it; cut it to make the feet). Use filter tip #20 to make the glazed skin colored hands, the blonde hair and the facial characteristic with black glaze.

Doll in sleeping bag
The sleeping bag is done with brown glaze and an American filter tip #403. First make the lower part of the sleeping bag with the mouth part open to be able to put the doll inside. Make a white pillow with filter tip #60; make a head using skin colored glaze with filter tip #01; with filter tip #60 make the arms (one going down and the other on the side of the head),and with filter tip #20 make the hands. Make the facial details and hair with filter tip #10.

Teddy bear
Using a filter tip #60 and brown glaze make a ball to make the head (moving the decorating sleeve a little horizontally) and the body (vertically) make a line on each side to make the arms. With a filter tip #30 and white glaze to make the snout, the center of the ears and the eye background (smash the last mentioned with your finger covered with starch). With the same filter tip but with black glaze draw the details on the face and with brown glaze make the center of the eyes, the sides of the ears and the fingers. If you wish to make a Christmas hat on the bear, make a line of red glaze with a filter tip #50, and finish it using a star filter tip #31 with white glaze.

Skull
Make the design of the crossbones and skull on a butter paper. Draw the bones first with a filter tip #80, making two joined drops for the tips. Draw the skull by putting a lot of pressure to make the top ball for the skull, reduce the pressure when going down towards the bottom half of the skull. Cut it. Put cornstarch on the tip of your finger and soften the point that is left from cutting the glaze. Use black glaze and filter tip #40 to draw the eye, the patch, the nose and the mouth.
