Hygiene in Fabrication and Manipulation
All glass bottles, whether new or used, need to be washed before being used. For second hand bottles or returnable bottles, the following is recommended:
Inspection Get rid of any broken and cracked bottle or any that have dirt in them, as well as those that have been used to store toxic substances in them.
Washing To wash the bottles, use detergent and bleach or a caustic soda solution at 1 – 2%. This can be done with scrub brushed or with mechanical washers.
Rinsing and drying The same method can be used to rinse and dry: it consists of a tube connected to small tubes that go into the bottles, united by a current of water or air.
Sterilizing Place the bottles standing over a cloth inside of a pot with boiling water for 10 minutes, or hold the open peak of a bottle over the peak of a boiling water kettle. Do this far away from the product just in case a bottle breaks.
