The decorating paste is what allows us to make the widest variety of objects, from big constructions to the smallest piece.
Decorating Paste Technique
Decorating paste
Ingredients
1 ½ tbsp flavorless jell-o
100 cc water
150 grs sugar
120 cc water
1 to 1 ½ kgs powdered sugar
Essence
Preparation
- Dissolve the jell-o in water.
- Put the sugar in a pot and put water enough to cover it, heat it at a high flame until you get light consistency syrup.
- Remove from fire and add the hydrated jell-o, add a little sifted powdered sugar, mixing well.
- Let it rest.
- Add the rest of the powdered sugar until the dough doesn’t stick to your hands (for this reason the amount of powdered sugar isn’t specified).
- Add the essence (if you wish) and the coloring.
Pieces for constructions
When working with this technique we must proceed in the following manner.
- Prepare the molds cutting each piece in cardboard.
- Stretch the already prepared decorating paste on a table sprinkled with cornstarch.
- For the thickness to be the same, roll a large stick on two rods of the decorating paste to give them the same thickness (generally 3mm).
- Place the molds and cut with a knife.
- Lift up the pieces carefully and rest them on flat surfaces (glass is perfect for this) or curved according to what is necessary, sprinkled also with starch.
- Make sure the molds coincide with what’s cut.
- Let it dry well for two days, if the pieces are very big and you have a deadline for the preparation, place the dough towards the stove or place it near an open oven door.
- Once all the pieces are dry sand them with a water sandpaper.
- Start building the construction gluing the pieces with royal glaze.
- Make sure that the glaze has dried well between the first two parts before adding the third part.
- In some cases the unions end up with glaze making a ribbing point chord.
Note Store the main dough in a glass container with a lid in the fridge for many weeks. At the moment of using remove a portion and add more sugar to it until it gets to its right point.
The already ready decorating paste must be stored in the freezer. If at the moment of using it’s a little dry, dampen your hands when kneading it.
Plaques for decorating paste
- Stretch the decorating paste as it has been instructed previously.
- Cut many oval or round shaped plaques with smooth or curled sides with special cutters.
- Let it dry on a very flat surface.
- Once it’s completely dry sand it.
- Trace the chosen drawing on butter paper with an HB pencil. Flip it over and re do the tracing in the back, flip it over again
