Coffee Beauty Treatments

In Japan people bathe in a coffee mixture that is ground and in fermented pineapple pulp to clean and soften their skin. They submerge in this mixture up to their necks for one hour. As the pineapple pulp ferments, it starts to heat up, creating a sauna effect.

Ground coffee can also be macerated in hot water for several hours to then strain it and mix it with henna to give a persons hair a beautiful reddish brown color. The coffee, as well as the henna are natural products and these constitute for a excellent dye for people whose hair is graying.

Coffee Medicinal Uses
Charles K. Tuckerman who was writing in the North American Review in 1889 swore that an older relative of his was dying in front of his own eyes, after not having eaten or drunken anything for several days, he practically came back from the dead after having drunken a cup of hot black coffee mixed with an egg yolk. We have to say that this one sounds like a very unique case though.

Some investigators in the University of Bristol have discovered that the caffeine content in a cup of strong instant coffee can suppress herpes and make irritations caused by the cold disappear quicker. Prepare a strong cup of coffee and with a piece of cotton, apply it over the affected area. It is also believed that zosters can react to a caffeine ointment.

Domestic Uses
In Lapland people use the coffee beans to count in a game called Taplo. If green coffee beans are used, these can be used as really good and cheap counters for all types of games. They can also be used to make collages. Be careful to not leave the coffee beans out in the reach of children as they could choke with them.

Three or four recently toasted coffee beans can also be placed in the ashtray of a car and they will help to absorb the cigarette smoke and ash smell, providing the car with a fresher smell.

Ground coffee can also be used to dye, and will give life to an old shirt. You will need around 500 to 1000 grams of used ground coffee, depending on the weight of the clothes that you wish to dye and on how dark you want them to be in the end.

To dye something you will need to tightly wrap the ground coffee in a piece of double muslin and place it in a big boiler with 13 to 18 liters of water, 3 tablespoons of salt, and 1 tablespoon of laundry soap. Boil the water slowly for approximately 10 minutes to extract some of the tint from the ground beans; then add in the clothing and let it continue to boil slowly for another 20 minutes until they acquire the color you want. Rinse the clothing until the water comes out clear and dry them. If you prefer you can also use the washer machine with hot water, which will give it a more uniform dye.
