Once Antonio Carletti took with him, back to Italy, the recipe for the preparation of chocolate, not a lot of time went by before the celebrated chocolate stores of Venice and Florence became so renowned because of their chocolate as they were for their coffee.
The coffee shops in England also started serving chocolate, but two stores were specifically opened in London that served this drink – White’s Cocoa House, that was next to the Palace of St. James, and The Cocoa Tree. – At the beginning White’s Cocoa House was known as a gaming joint that was not very recommended, however later on it became the first club of the city for respectable gentlemen.
The Cocoa Tree that was located on 64th of St. James Street was extraordinarily popular during the reign of Queen Ana. It was the meeting place of the Tories, and Defoe, in his book “Journey Through England”, wrote that a Whig would no longer go to the Cocoa Tree… and neither would a Tory be seen in at cafĂ© of St. James. Just like White’s, the Cocoa Tree also became a gambling joint and a club, amongst whose members were Byron and Gibbon.
