There are actually three types of cabbage, green, purple and white. Cabbage is a vegetable that has a high content of anti oxidants and it is believed, just as with broccoli, that it has some properties that fight against cancer. Out of the three types of cabbage that exist, the green one is the one that has the most amount of nutrients.

Colon cleanser
Cabbage is excellent for digestion especially if it is eaten raw or as part of a cocktail of fresh vegetables. Cabbage cleans the digestive apparatus completely, particularly the stomach and the superior colon. It mitigates stomach problems and indigestion problems and if it is drunken in a juice form every day in the long run it can help to cure stomach ulcers. It is also good for people that suffer from constipation since it not only helps get rid of the pain by stimulating peristaltic movement, but it also cleanses the colon which can suffer from conformation of toxins if constipation lasts a long time.

Rich in minerals
Cabbage contains a lot of valuable minerals. Calcium is indispensable to have strong teeth and bones, as well as for the adequate functioning of the nervous system, muscles, heart and blood clotting. Magnesium also helps to keep the muscular system healthy as well as the proper functioning of the nervous system and repairs the body’s cellular level. It is also believed that it helps to improve hangovers probably because of the fact that it cleanses the liver, which is the organ that alcohol begins to metabolize in.

Colds and flu
Cabbage has an antibacterial property and strengthens the immunological system. Its high content of vitamin C collaborates in the construction of defenses against colds, sniffles and other infections and the water that the cabbage is cooked in can be used. Just add in a pinch of ginger or cayenne pepper and drink it as this will alleviate colds and unstuff your head and lungs.

Selecting, storing and using cabbage
Green cabbage should have a firm heart and a strong color. If possible try to choose the ones that do not have bruises since these are the ones that generally have the most amount of nutrients. The leaves that are damaged can be used to make a juice or for cooking. It’s better to steam cabbage rather than boiling it.

White and purple cabbages are harder and the leaves are stuck on more firmly than the green cabbages. Look for the ones that have a more intense color and that have intact leaves.

After buying it, no matter what variety you choose, use it as soon as possible and keep it in the refrigerator and wash them well before eating them raw or cooked.
